This year, we’re celebrating a remarkable milestone: 15 years of the Library Settlement Partnership (LSP) at London Public Library. Since its launch in 2009 at Jalna and Beacock branches, this program has grown into a vital resource for newcomers, offering support, connection, and hope as they begin new lives in Canada.
Today, LSP operates at seven Library locations across London, thanks to partnerships with three local agencies:
- LUSO Community Services (Masonville, Stoney Creek, and Beacock branches)
- Northwest London Resource Centre (Sherwood and Cherryhill branches)
- South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre (Bostwick and Jalna branches)
Funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), LSP served 10,817 clients with nearly 20,000 visits in 2023 alone—a testament to its role as a lifeline for individuals and families adapting to life in a new country.
With the help of dedicated settlement workers and a wealth of accessible resources, the program empowers newcomers to navigate challenges and feel at home in London.
Behind every LSP interaction is a story of resilience and transformation. A family finds housing and relief knowing they’ve secured a safe place to call home. A newcomer begins English classes, unlocking opportunities for education and work. Connections are made, and the feeling of isolation begins to fade.
Lifei, a program participant, reflected on her experience, "Whenever I wanted to sign up for English classes, I didn’t know where to begin. The Library Settlement Partnership gave me guidance and support.”
Settlement workers are available at several Library branches five days a week, including evenings and weekends, making services accessible to those with busy schedules. They offer support in multiple languages and guidance in key areas like housing, health care, employment, and immigration. Their expertise helps newcomers navigate complex systems, providing clarity and confidence in unfamiliar situations.
This 15th anniversary celebrates the hard work of settlement workers, the resilience of newcomers, and the power of community partnerships. It’s a testament to how Libraries serve as hubs of connection, inclusion, and support for everyone.
We’re deeply grateful to all who have contributed to the program’s success—especially the settlement workers whose knowledge and compassion have changed so many lives. As we look to the future, we’re excited to continue helping newcomers thrive in London.
