Nurturing young minds and building confidence

At Bostwick Branch, the vibrant hum of community life is ever-present, thanks to its unique location within the Startech.com Community Centre. From the excitement of hockey tournaments to the bustling energy of YMCA campers, the branch has become a central hub where fun and learning seamlessly blend. Public Services Librarian Sara Clarke, who serves Bostwick, Lambeth, and Glanworth Branches, has witnessed this dynamic environment up close.

“I’ve loved working at Bostwick for the past two years! It’s a very special branch with super friendly and talented staff and a wonderful community,” Sara shares. “Getting to know families through the Books for Babies and Storytime programs has been one of my favourite parts of this job.”

One Storytime session in particular stands out for Sara. “One of the most rewarding moments I’ve experienced was with a couple of toddlers who had been very quiet in our Storytime sessions, barely speaking at all. Over time, as they became more comfortable and engaged with the songs and activities, they started talking and singing more. The breakthrough came when they confidently joined in, and then, in front of the entire group, proudly shared their names out loud for the first time. Watching their transformation—from shy and hesitant to expressive and self-assured—was pure Storytime magic.”

For Sara, seeing children grow in confidence and develop a love for literacy is a testament to the lasting impact of these programs.

Beyond Storytime, Sara has also built connections through visits to local schools in Bostwick and Lambeth. The enthusiasm of students during these visits is unmistakable. “When children realize that the Library is a community space for EVERYONE and that we have books and programs to match all interests, they get so excited,” Sara explains. “Some children are so eager to share what they’ve discovered that they bring their families to the Library later the same day to show them around!”

This sense of community engagement is also reflected in Bostwick’s tech programs and clubs. Sara finds joy in leading the Cricut and 3D Printing Maker Clubs, where Tweens and Teens unleash their creativity. The monthly Bostwick Book Club for ages 10-13 further nurtures a love of reading and learning. “We have a great community of makers and readers at Bostwick, and I’m always learning new things from them!”

From toddlers taking their first steps in literacy to teens exploring technology and creativity, Bostwick Branch is a place where the community thrives through connection, learning, and growth.
