Strengthening Community Connections Across London

This summer, we had the privilege of connecting with thousands of Londoners through 27 outreach events. From celebrating Pride and Indigenous Solidarity to welcoming newcomers and honouring cultural heritage, we’ve been out in the community sharing all that the Library has to offer. Over the course of these events, we connected with around 20,000 people, and we’re excited to share some highlights of our summer outreach.

Celebrating Pride with Our Community

One of the most vibrant moments of our summer was celebrating Pride. We began with Wortley Pride on June 8, where the love and support for the 2LGBTQ+ community was inspiring. At this event, we formed a partnership with Queer Intersections, laying the groundwork for future programs that we’ll develop together.

In July, we joined the Pride Festival and the Pride Parade. At the festival we made buttons, sold tote bags, and had great conversations with people of all ages. The Pride Parade was especially memorable, with about 40 of our staff and volunteers marching together, a powerful reminder of how important it is to stand in solidarity.

Our new Pride quilts and book cover signs were a big hit, and it was heartwarming to hear so many positive comments from the community. In the future, we’re planning to use the quilts in displays to celebrate inclusivity.

Welcoming Newcomer Families

Welcoming newcomers to London is an important part of our mission. On June 12, we attended the East Carling PS Newcomer Families Group event, where we introduced new residents to our services, issued Library cards, and even saw some families visit Central Library later that day. It’s always rewarding to help newcomers feel at home in their new community.

Later in the summer, at the Happy Habitats Festival on August 10, we met many families experiencing the Library for the first time. With the help of the South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre, we introduced them to our weekly conversation circles and children’s programs. The nature-themed books we brought were a hit, igniting excitement for reading and learning among the children and parents alike.

Celebrating Cultural Heritage

This summer also provided opportunities to honour and celebrate Indigenous knowledge and culture, and the richness and diversity of the many communities who now call London home. On Indigenous Solidarity Day at Oneida, we were deeply moved by the traditional Indigenous dancing, even though the heat forced the event indoors. It was a powerful day of connection, celebrating the history of this land.

On July 28, we took part in Emancipation Day celebrations at Fanshawe Pioneer Village, hosted by the London Black History Coordinating Committee. The day was filled with community pride, music, presentations about London’s rich Black History, and a joyful parade. We engaged with children through games and activities, while sharing information about the Library with families—a wonderful opportunity to be part of such a historic event.

Building Stronger Ties with Local Communities

Throughout the summer, we attended various community events, where we strengthened existing partnerships and formed new ones. The Genesis Co-Op BBQ on August 16th was a fantastic example. The kids had a blast with our crafts and activities, and many were excited about our upcoming Comic Con event at the Central Library. We handed out free books, which the children loved. We’re already planning to return this fall to support back-to-school efforts and share our READ program.

The LUSO Summer Fair was another highlight, where we connected with over 160 families. By sharing information, frisbees and water bottles, and issuing Library cards on the spot, we helped more people discover the resources and services available at their Library.

Connecting with Older Adults

Our outreach extended to older adults as well. On August 2, we celebrated the first anniversary of the Third Age Outreach Between the Lines Book Club with trivia games, book swaps, and Library card renewals. This ongoing partnership has been a wonderful way to build community among older adults.

We also continue to visit long-term care homes and hospitals to deliver books and magazines, keeping residents engaged with the Library’s resources. For those unable to visit in person, these deliveries provide an important connection to the world of reading and learning.
